How to Close (Winterize) Your Hot Tub Spa

Be careful closing down your spa yourself. If any water is left in your hot tub it can freeze and cause cracking and that can be very costly to fix. If you are not comfortable with closing down your spa yourself, please contact your local pool and spa company and schedule an appointment for them to come out and close down your spa.

1. TURN OFF THE POWER. Make sure there is absolutely no power getting to your spa. Now remove your thermal cover (if you have one) and by using a sump pump or the spa's own drain plug, begin draining your spa completely. If you decide to use a sump pump make sure when your finished to remove the drain plug from your spa anyway.

Spa

2. Open your spa panel where your heater is and turn it off. Next put your spa cover back on and turn your spa back on to activate the air blower. Let your air blower run for 30 seconds to blow all the remaining water out of the pipes. If you don't have an air blower then you don't need to do this step.

3. Remove the cover and suck out the water that was blown out of the pipes from the air blower. Make sure you get all the water out, the foot well and the area where your filters are located can be tricky getting the water out. If need be use a towel to soak up all the remaining water.

4. Go to the spa control pack and trip the ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI). Now turn off your spa completely again.

5. Remove any drain plugs from your spa pump(s) that look like they are drain plugs and can be unscrewed and taken out. Also look on the heater for any quick disconnect drain plugs. Now replace the panel to the spa securely

6. The last thing you need to do is blow out water from the pipes. Take a shop vac on the blow setting or an air compressor and hold it up against each jet in your hot tub spa. This should help get out any water remaining in your jet hoses. Once this is done, suck up all the water that was blown out and replace the hot tub cover securely so it does not blow away. Now You're done. Just remember, if you do not feel comfortable closing your tub, please contact a pool and spa professional in your area to help you with this.

Open A Day Spa - 6 Tips To Help You Get Stated In The Spa Business

If you intend to open a day spa you can begin the project by discovering more about the spa industry. Spas are all over the place, and you can find one a mile apart from each other, maybe closer. This means that the salon and spa business is still booming despite today's economic difficulties. It also means that competition is tough because there are so many spas to compete with.

Considering the competition, it might be a good idea to know more about the ins and outs of running a salon before you open a day spa business. The more knowledgeable you are about the business, the less likely you will commit costly mistakes. You should also research the best way to get more customers and make more money. Here are some tips that may help you start it better.

Spa

Funding - You will need a lot of money to start a spa because you will have to buy so many equipment and supplies for various procedures. Do some calculations and find out if you have enough cash to open a day spa business. Consider the cost of constructing the spa, rent, a ton of equipment and supplies, employee wage, and marketing to come up with a more accurate number. If you find that you don't have enough money to open a day spa, you can approach a bank to borrow money.

Business plan - Create a business plan first. A business plan can help you get a loan from a bank to start a spa. It will also be helpful because a business plan outlines everything you need to know about starting and running a day spa. Your business plan should outline capital and budget; equipment; suppliers; employee training, hiring and wage; location; construction; and marketing.

Location - location is very important for any business, but for a spa, you also have to consider the market and what type of people are there in a certain location. It isn't just about opening a spa where there's a lot of foot traffic. You also have to adjust your rates and services to the available market. Choose upscale neighborhoods for a day spa. Low income to mid-income groups may provide a lot of foot traffic but probably won't spend that much at a spa or even visit it that much.

Construction and design - When you open a day spa, one of the fun parts will be designing the salon. This is where you can play around with your ideas. It's important not to get carried away when designing a spa. Of course you would like to have hip looking spa or one that looks and feels luxurious. If you are going to be located at an upscale area, design your salon luxuriously so that clients will feel comfortable in your establishment. You don't have to go overboard designing a day spa in a middle class neighborhood though.

Advertising and Marketing - Promoting your spa is essential to success and profitability. Without aggressive marketing, you won't be able to get more clients or earn money. Start advertising before you open a day spa to let people know they have a new salon to go to. Innovative marketing strategies can help you earn more and maintain a loyal flock of customers. Competition is touch and you have to keep promoting your business to have an edge.

Tanning Equipment - You have to practice some self control when buying tanning equipment. Everyone wants the latest tanning beds but reality should tell you that your money may be better spent on marketing than on buying brand new expensive tanning beds. New models of tanning beds can be very expensive, but what will you do with all those beautiful equipment if your marketing is weak and can't bring in any customers when you open a day spa?

Eyelash Tinting - Why to Go to a Professional Salon or Day Spa

After using mascara once or twice a day, for most of my adult life, I looked into eyelash tinting. There are many at-home kits you can order online for under of course, but I found some scary stuff online too: bad reactions, horror stories, you name it. I am no fan of fear-mongering, but I do want give a concise account of why to leave lash tinting to the professionals.

If you go to a salon or day spa to get your eyelashes tinted, you are going to pay twice as much as doing it yourself. But think of it this way: If you pay a professional to do your nails, how much more important are your eyes? If you mess up in a finger nail at home, it can hurt or look all jagged or scary. But you really don't want to risk allergic reactions, pain, or even (some have claimed) blindness over bucks.

Eyelash Tinting at Home:

Eyelash Tinting - Why to Go to a Professional Salon or Day Spa

It might seem funny, but some women try to tint their own lashes at home - By themselves. This means they prepare one eye, keep it closed for the entire 15-20 waiting time (looking and watching with the other eye), clean that first eye off, and then do the same for the other eye. I have never worn an eye patch, but I personally wouldn't want to do a process using only one eye. It seems like it would ache and strain from the over-use and concentration.

Like many beauty processes, girlfriends often do each other up. Sometimes they make an evening of it with wine; sometimes that can be a bad idea. No judgement being passed here... just don't leave that perm activator or hair color in too long ladies!

Some at-home eyelash tinting kits come with little paper slips used to protect the eyelid skin from the tint. Several consumers report those slips being hard to cut to exactly the right shape.

I found a big selling, brand-name kit online whose first direction said: "For Professional Use Only". Really?

One big question you should ask yourself before trying this at home is: Will I be prepared for what to do in case I or my girlfriend have an allergic reaction to the tint? Sometimes just flushing the eye out doesn't do it. More on this next.

Eyelash Tint Allergic Reactions:

Most day spas or salons use gentle, vegetable dye when tinting lashes and eyebrows (same as the at-home kits). The reasoning is obvious: they want to avoid using ammonia or harsh chemicals right on the eyes. This does also result in the dye only lasting for about 4-6 weeks. But even vegetable-based tints/dyes can cause allergic reactions.

Symptoms can be stinging, swelling, pain, and the inability to open the eye until the reaction is over. For this reason your salon esthetician will give you a patch test, to test for an allergy to the tint-used.

Here's an example of a woman whose reaction was so bad, that she thought she had been blinded.

Best Eyelash Tinting Practices:

These are similar to any service you're looking at having done, with a few exceptions. Please go to a professional, just like the on the online kit's directions recommends. Make sure to look for online reviews about the salon you are considering. Don't go for an eyelash tint if you are agitated or in a rush; it will make it harder to relax and keep your eyes closed. Talk to the clients in the waiting room about their experiences. Get the name of your esthetician for future reference (good or bad). Let others know about your eyelash tinting experience, from the salon's staff, to your friends, to online reviews.
